A Day in the Life of Amy in Sola. . .

5:45 am rooster crows (even with ear plugs in, I can hear him)

6 am roll out of bed, make breakfast

until ~7 am eat while reading or writing in my journal, mentally preparing for the day (aka waking up)

7 am get ready (wash face, brush teeth, put on clothes, fix hair, take my vitamin, go get water in my pitcher to have for the day)

7:20 am lock up house with my pad lock, walk 7-10 minutes to work at the education office in Sola

7:30 am workday begins with a small prayer given by the PEO, then we storian (chat) and figure out the days agenda

7:45 am sit at my desk, write letters, read a novel, or glance through some work documents; sometimes, figure out if I need to work on anything important (usually not)

8:20 am 2 mosquitoes are bugging me; light a mosquito coil

9:30 am time for a cookie break and then back to reading again

11:30 am time for lunch (walk back home, eat, read, do some puzzles, wash dishes in my dishwasher, aka: two large basins with cold water and soap)

1:30 pm (yes, we get a two-hour lunch break here. Jealous?) start work again, reading, doing puzzles

2:45 pm type a letter for the PEO, do a few other things on the computer (Im the only one in the office who has any typing skills, so I become the receptionist every now and then)

3:45 pm work on my newsletter to send out to all the teachers in the province

4:30 pm time to go home!

4:45 pm walk to the store, buy some needed items (dry cereal, crackers, peanuts, kerosene, tin meat, candles)

5:00 pm while walking home, stop to talk with some neighbors, keeping up with the local gossip or just chatting (forging relationships is very important!)

5:15 pm (back at home) go swim (Bislama for take a shower, always cold), sit out on my little porch and watch TV (aka: people walking by, drinking kava at the kava bar next door, children playing)

6 pm start cooking my dinner (this particular night it was rice, tin meat, and gravy yum!)

6:20 pm its starting to get dark: have to light candles and my kerosene lantern

6:30 pm eat while reading, writing, or doing puzzles (must light another mosquito coil; they are the worst at dawn and dusk)

7 pm read or write in journal, or if Im feeling domestic, sew a pillow (difficult to do by candle light, though), listen to a CD; aka getting ready for bed/winding down

7:45 pm get in bed, put in earplugs, read

8:45 pm turn down kerosene lantern and go to sleep
